MEDICAL WARNING BOARD
A medical warning board for Rally and Off-Road racing is a dual-sided safety sign used to signal a crew's status to following competitors and rescue marshals after an incident.
Specifications and Design
-
Layout: Features a Red Cross (or SOS) on one side and a green "O" for OK on the reverse side.
-
Material: Typically made from rigid, waterproof plastic (at least 1mm thick) to withstand harsh racing environments.
-
Size: Standard regulations typically require boards to measure 400mm x 400mm
-
Availability: These compliant boards are standard items available through specialized local motorsport equipment suppliers.
How It Works During a Race
-
The "OK" Side (Green): Shown to passing competitors if the vehicle has stopped, but no medical assistance or intervention is needed. This tells trailing drivers they do not need to stop and can proceed safely.
-
The Red Cross Side (SOS): Displayed prominently if there is any injury or medical emergency. This signals upcoming competitors that they must stop, assess the situation, deploy their mandatory first-aid kits, and relay the emergency details to the next radio marshal point.
-
Mandatory Carriage: Regulations require competing vehicles to store these boards—alongside warning triangles—securely inside the cockpit where they are easily accessible at all times during an event.
