Caring for Your Nomex Racing Gear
As every racing driver is acutely aware, motorsport is a very dangerous sport and accidents do happen. When it comes to your protective racing gear, there should be no compromise on your safety!!
One of the big risks of a racing accident is the start of a fire. Being trapped in a flaming car must be terrifying and the last thing you want is to be wearing racing gear that melts at high temperatures. This is why most racing drivers choose to wear suits and under garments made from Nomex®.
Nomex® fabric was designed to meet the needs of workers in the oil & gas, petrochemical, utilities, manufacturing and transportation industries but is now widely used for protective racing gear. From superior heat and flame protection to extreme arc flash protection, Nomex® fabric is designed for the harshest conditions and available exclusively from DuPont.
The FIA have in fact recently tightened up on the ruling that F1 drivers need to wear fire-proof underwear and balaclavas. In order for a race suit to be FIA Approved, they need to be made from fire-proof fabric, such as Nomex®.
In order to get the benefits of your Nomex® suit’s fire proof properties, it is crucial that you take proper care of your race gear.
Nomex® race gear can be machine washed in warm or cold water. Before washing your garments, treat any grease stains, to remove this from the fabric. DuPont advises against using ordinary soaps containing acids or alkalis on Nomex® material.
Once you have washed your garments, let them dry indoors or outdoors but keep out of direct sunlight.
If you take good care of your Nomex® race gear, they will protect you on the race track.
